What is an end suction pump?
A type of
centrifugal pump, end suction pumps are single-stage pumps with only one impeller. The suction pipe along with the casing is present on one end. The other end has the discharge outlet. How do end suction pumps work?
The majority of end-suction pumps have only one impeller. The liquid to be pumped moves on the impeller vanes, raising the liquid’s velocity. From the impeller, the liquid moves to the casing, where the liquid’s high velocity is converted into high pressure via diffusion.
Generally, most end-suction pumps operate using an AC motor. However, they can also operate using DC electric motors, hydraulic motors, air motors, diesel and petrol engines, and steam turbines.
Types of End Suction Pumps
End suction pumps are of two major types:
Close-coupled end suction pump
In this type, the pump impeller is directly attached to the driver shaft, and there is no separate coupling between the impeller and the shaft. Generally, end suction pumps that are used for water pumping in residential and commercial applications are close-coupled. They are made of iron or plastic and available at affordable costs.
Frame-mounted end suction pump
In this type, the pump has a bearing set and couplings, separating the motor and the pump. End suction pumps that are used for heavy-duty industrial applications are mounted on a bedplate. It has a coupling that separates the motor and the pump.
Heavy-duty end-suction pumps are made using stainless steel or high-grade alloys and plastic. Alternatively, it can also be made using hardened iron for corrosion resistance in applications that displace slurry. Frame-mounted end-suction pumps are used in mineral processing, dredging, mining, and other industrial applications.
End suction pumps used in food processing and chemical industries have open impellers as they pump liquids that contain solids. Pumps that are used for pumping clean water and oil have closed impellers.
